I can’t believe I’ve only just heard this song (thanks Bill & Miko), but at least I’m only a year behind the times. I’m usually saying stuff like, “Har Mar Superstar broke up when?” I also can’t believe that Sean Tillman, the guy who for all intents and purposes is Har Mar Superstar, looks like the love child of Ron Jeremy and Paul Giamatti, yet sings like motherfuzicking Stevie Wonder and Sam Cooke. The title is actually a reference to Sam Cooke’s alleged last words to motel manager, Bertha Franklin, who killed him with a shotgun on December 11, 1964.
“Lady You Shot Me” sounds like Etta James sandwiched around a more self-consciously retro “Fuck You” — although Tillman would probably title his “Fuck Me.” The video cleverly nods to the Jackson 5 during the punching trumpet dance sequence (2:04-2:14). “Lady” is the first track on Bye Bye 17, a hydroponic funk tank filled with slinky, boogie down sex jams. Seriously, if you can’t get laid while this album is playing, yo dick is broke. That goes for women AND men.
And then there’s this.
