I would be remiss if I let 11/11/11 pass without acknowledging the profound cultural influence of Spinal Tap‘s legendary guitarist, Nigel Tufnel. Sure, his solos were his trademark, but he doesn’t get nearly enough credit for rediscovering the saddest of all keys (D minor) in all its Machian splendor. And who else but Nigel dared ask, “What’s wrong with being sexy?” However, if one Tufnelian contribution stands above all others in the Western canon, it was his emotional bravery to suggest that at our best, we can all go to 11.
Oh Nigel, you’ll always be one louder.
