I’m briefly reviving The Adios Lounge for a very special reason. I want to wish my eldest daughter, Leilani, a happy 10th birthday. Double figures, baby! It’s hard to believe you were born a decade ago. It’s also hard to believe I haven’t been allowed to speak with you since you were 3. Well, you are officially closer to 18 — when you can do what you damn well please — than you are to 0, so clearly the hero in all of this is Time. Time doesn’t just heal Leilani-sized holes in the heart, it’s also an unwitting ally for both of us. Remember: We are samurai. We can take what the weak dish out, persevere, and come out the other side stronger and better. Keep fighting, honey.

Candy just doesn’t taste as good anymore”
Your birthday also gives me an excuse to play this killer Alejandro Escovedo song — which I’m happy to note, my other daughters have adopted as something of an anthem. Edie and Lu love to sing this in the car. Well, this and about a dozen other songs on Bloodshot’s kids compilation, The Bottle Let Me Down. “The Big 1-0” is about getting older and things not being as fun as they used to be. Yeah, I think I can relate to that concept. Love you, Leilani. Daddy misses you everyday.

This is heartbreaking. I hope you get to see her sooner, rather than later.
Thank you so much, Gene. That means a lot. And yeah, I agree with you.
I just found this site today … .holy cow ! Lance I hope you can find a way back to writing one day and a million best wishes that you can reconnect with your daughter sooner rather than later. As a father of three with two daughters I can only imagine what that would be like.
Thank you, Dean. That means a lot.
