“There’s a ringing in my ears that’s heaven sent
There’s a beast out on the ruins
Some broken down lover’s lament
It goes on and on, but it won’t go away.”
Yesterday’s post may have featured Soul Asylum, Slobberbone, and a few of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll songs of all-time, but one song was conspicuous in its absence. Dan Murphy of Soul Asylum wrote “Cartoon” for their 1988 Hang Time album and it’s unquestionably one of the most sweeping anthems of its era. A&M’s video for “Cartoon” was filmed in glorious, 1980s pastel-o-vision, and while a bit dated, the live shots give you a feel (kinda sorta) of the band at its peak. Enjoy.
The lyric that always has haunted me: “You’re in the movies now and I’m in your cartoon…”
I know that’s the chorus, (intentional hooky?), but are the werds that ring my (mental) bell.
Nice posting. I am absorbing it.
I’m glad I listened to the Slobberbone cover, but… I’ve got to delete it from my HD… ah, that (kick-drun/ cymbal) is just too propulsive for my tender self to withstand.
Your stilted solderor in Shight,
Matt
Heh heh. No problem. It certainly could qualify as a “you had to be there” moment. Or maybe it’s all part of my training regimen. A year from now I bet you’re begging for louder, faster music, tenderness be damned!
Should have been a hit.
Here’s the cover from a promotional CD single.
Cool cover looks kind of Chris Mars-ish but I’m not sure who did it.
cartoon
ps. thanks for the texas tornado stuff
I gave the Slobbebone another listen, and am thinking I judged it a bit too quick. It’ll probably settle into my collection nicely.
Philco: Thanks for the link to the CD cover. That sure does look like a Mars painting to me.
Matt: My pro-rock and/or roll agenda is working to perfection. BWAHAHAHA!!!
it;’s always fucking cool when you find out your favourite band of all time have covered your other favouritew band of all time
